2000-2001 AWARD RECIPIENTS
Dr. John Riesen
Dr. John Riesen, professor of Animal Science, has taught a University Learning Skills class as part of the First Year Experience program since the program’s inception in 1996. Always quick to expose new technologies for their potential to improve teaching, learning, and interactivity, Dr. Riesen has been instrumental in incorporating WebCT into University Learning Skills classes. In the Department of Animal Science, Dr. Riesen teaches classes in reproductive physiology, animal physiology, nutrition, and computer utilization in agriculture. He also supports instruction beyond his own classroom and has published articles on developing students’ oral communication skills, using interactive auto-tutorials and the case study approach to teaching. As part of this initiative, he is currently working with Dr. Suman Singha on a book entitled “Case Studies for the FYE.”
Judith Brown Ms. Judith Brown, lecturer of Diagnostic Genetic Sciences and Interim Director of Allied Health Undergraduate Courses, has taught a Faculty-Student Seminar as part of the First Year Experience program for two semesters. Her seminar, entitled “Genetics in the Popular Media,” draws on her personal background in cytogenetics and molecular biology and ties in it with popular media. Students in her course, through analysis of magazines, newspapers, literature, web pages, televisions shows, and films, explore the difficulties in presenting the facts of scientific procedures to the lay public. Ms. Brown has also been on the forefront of incorporating web technology into her course, not only through using WebCT but also through encouraging and fostering student use of various search systems. In the Department of Diagnostic Genetic Sciences, Ms. Brown teaches introductory laboratories in cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics as well as a chromosome imaging seminar. |
