JoAnne Lewis
JoAnne serves as Director of Academic Skills Assessment and Services in the Institute for Student Success, Center for Undergraduate Education at the University of Connecticut. Over the past thirty years she has held positions at the University as Director of Counseling, and Director of the Office of Special Programs. Prior to joining UConn, she held positions as School Social Worker in Granville Co., N.C., Recreational Therapist for Newington Children's Hospital, CT., Caseworker, Catholic Family Services, Hartford, CT, and Counselor and Instructor, Manchester Community College, CT. An active member of the University community, JoAnne teaches two classes, is 2005-2006 Chair of the Women's Center Advisory Board and previously served as Chair of its Diversity Committee. She is also a member of the Advisory Boards for the Center for Academic Programs and, the African American Cultural Center. Outside the University, JoAnne provides service to the community through Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where she is a member of the Scholarship Committee, and Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, where she served as Honorary Co-Chair of their 2004 annual Gala fundraising event. JoAnne holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, a Master's Degree in Social Work, both from the University of Connecticut, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Social Studies from St. Augustine's College, Raleigh, N.C. |

Adrian McCleary
Adrian has been an Academic Advisor in the Academic Center for Exploratory Students (ACES) since June, 2002. He attended the University at Buffalo (Buffalo, NY) where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications in 2000. During this time, Adrian developed an enthusiasm for working with college students and completed a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration in 2002 at the same institution. During his graduate studies, he worked very closely with the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). EOP is an initiative to recruit and retain students from underrepresented populations to colleges and universities. As a member of the EOP staff, Adrian coordinated summer residential programming, mentoring programs as well as tutorial services for over 250 students. Since his arrival at UConn, Adrian has been involved with a number of programs. He currently serves as an advisor for ACES, counselor for the Student Support Services program (SSS), and an instructor for First Year Experience. During the fall, Adrian teaches two sections of first year experience courses for the ACES and SSS Living and Learning Communities. Both courses are designed to assist students with a successful transition to the university environment in and out of the classroom. Additionally, Adrian has been the instructor of the "Searching for a Major" class since the spring of 2003. This course has been instrumental in guiding undecided students towards the selection of majors by utilizing a variety of innovative activities and thought provoking discussions. Adrian is passionate about mentoring students and contributing to their success both academically and personally. He prides himself in developing meaningful connections and regards each student with a great deal of respect and enthusiasm. |

Laura Rowley
Laura is a sixth semester Family Studies major. She has been involved in First Year Experience Mentoring for the past two years. In addition, Laura assists in training future First Year Experience mentors by being a teaching assistant for the Educational Psychology 230 course that focuses on Peer Education. Laura assisted in the planning and execution of PeerFest 2005 to further instruct the peer educators on campus. She currently works at the Center for Students with Disabilities. Laura enjoys working with college students and plans to go onto graduate school focusing on Higher Education. She is a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi as well as the Golden Key International Honour Society maintaining a 3.71 cumulative grade point average. In addition, Laura has accepted the position of Secretary of the Golden Key International Honour Society. As a member of the Ballroom Dance Team, she competes and represents the University of Connecticut at various competition venues. |

Kate Lennard
Kate, a 4th semester biological sciences major at UConn and an aspiring doctor, is flattered to have received the title of FYE Mentor of the Year. She is a hard worker and spends most of her time participating in various volunteering positions. Being a Husky Ambassador, a UConn Connects facilitator, a Violence Against Women Prevention Program Peer Educator, and mentor in the FYE program are only a couple of her numerous accomplishments. She enjoys being part of these programs in which she can be a resource to her peers and provide guidance to those who seek it. Kate fell in love with medicine at a young age and currently works in an ER to get her feet wet. She hopes to enter medical school after graduation from UConn and work in the emergency room setting where she will be able to continue aiding people who need it the most.
